Budgery

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 29 July 2026

Budgery is a task planner built for people with ADHD and other attention challenges. This policy explains, in plain English, what information we collect, why we collect it, where it lives, and the control you have over it.

We keep this short on purpose. If anything here is unclear, email us at the address in the Contact section and we will explain it properly.

Who we are

Budgery is an independent app made by a solo developer based in Australia, under ShakSphere. We are not a medical provider, not a government body, and not a financial service. We are a productivity tool.

For the purposes of the Australian Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), the Budgery developer is the entity responsible for your personal information ("we", "us", "our").

The short version

  • We collect the email you sign in with, the tasks and schedule data you create, and basic usage signals about how the app is used.
  • Your task data is stored in Australia (Supabase, Sydney region).
  • We never sell your data. We never use it for advertising.
  • Some features send a limited slice of data overseas, mostly to the United States: AI task breakdown and voice capture (Google Gemini), subscription management (RevenueCat), crash and error reporting (Sentry and Google Firebase Crashlytics), sign-in (Google or Apple, if you use those buttons), and the feedback you choose to submit. We explain exactly what each one receives below.
  • Budgery asks for microphone and calendar access for specific features. Both are optional, and both are explained below.
  • You can ask us to show or correct your data at any time by email, and delete it through our data deletion form.

How you sign in

Budgery gives you several ways to create an account and sign in:

  • Magic link — you enter your email, we send a one-time sign-in link. No password.
  • Email and password — if you have set a password on your account.
  • Sign in with Google — Google confirms your identity to us and passes us your email address.
  • Sign in with Apple — Apple confirms your identity to us. If you choose Apple's "Hide My Email" option, we only ever see the relay address Apple generates.

Whichever method you use, we receive your email address and a user ID. We never receive or store your Google or Apple password.

Your account is held with Supabase (our authentication and database provider, in Sydney). We also mirror your sign-in into Google Firebase Authentication so that crash reports can be linked to an account when we are diagnosing a bug. Firebase therefore also holds your email address and a Firebase user ID. It holds no task content.

By creating an account and continuing past the sign-in screen, you agree to this policy and to our terms, as stated on that screen.

What we collect and why

Your email address

We store your email so we can keep you signed in, link your tasks to your account, and let another Budgery user send you a task-sharing invite (see Sharing with other people).

Why: to authenticate you and secure your account.

Your task and schedule content

This includes task names, notes, subtasks, due dates, time blocks, priority and category labels, recurring task rules, shopping list items, and vaulted (parked) tasks. It is the core content you create in the app.

Why: this is the app. Without it there is nothing to plan.

Your progress data

Streak history, XP and level, rewards and unlocks, Pomodoro focus session counts, days active, and your budgie companion preferences (colour, accessories, mood history).

Why: to keep your streaks and progress consistent across sessions and devices.

Your preference answers and your "About me" notes

If you choose to answer the optional in-app questions about how you work (your goals, your focus style, mood preferences), we store those answers. If you choose to write an "About me" context note in the You screen, we store that too.

Why: to tailor the experience and to understand who the app is helping. All of this is optional and you can skip or clear it. Note that your "About me" note is sent to the AI provider when you use task breakdown — see the AI section below, and please do not put anything in it you would not want sent there.

Feedback you submit

If you fill in an in-app feedback or questionnaire prompt, we store your answers together with your app version, operating system version, device model, and whether you have an active subscription. Completed feedback is also posted to a private team channel on Discord so we see it promptly. That message contains your answers and those technical details. It does not contain your email address, your name, or your tasks.

Why: to hear what is and is not working, and to reproduce problems on the right device and app version.

Voice notes

If you use the brain-dump feature to add tasks by speaking, your device's own speech recognition converts what you say into text. Depending on your device and settings, that conversion may be performed on-device or by Apple or Google on their servers, under their own privacy policies. Budgery receives only the resulting text. That text is then sent to the AI provider so it can be split into separate tasks, and the tasks are saved to your account.

We do not record, store, or upload the audio itself. If you never use the voice feature, no microphone data is ever captured.

Why: to let you dump a list of tasks out loud instead of typing them.

Calendar entries you create

If you grant calendar access and choose to add a task to your calendar, Budgery writes an event to the calendar you pick on your device. To do that it reads the list of calendars available on your device, and stores the ID of the event it created so it can update or remove it later.

Budgery does not read, upload, or store the contents of your existing calendar events. Calendar entries are written on your device, to your calendar account — they are not sent to our servers.

Why: so scheduled tasks show up where you already look.

Basic usage signals

Which features are opened and how often, in aggregate. Where we can, this is anonymised and not tied to your identity.

Why: to find what is confusing or unused and improve it.

Crash and diagnostic data

When the app hits an error or crashes, we send a diagnostic report to Sentry and Google Firebase Crashlytics. A report typically contains the error and stack trace, a trail of the recent in-app actions that led to it, your device model, operating system version, app version, and an installation or account identifier. It is not designed to include your task content, though a piece of task text can occasionally appear inside an error message. We do not use these reports for anything other than fixing bugs.

Why: to keep the app stable and fix crashes we would otherwise never hear about.

Subscription status

If you subscribe, the app store billing (Google Play Billing or the Apple App Store) handles the payment. We receive only your entitlement status (subscribed or not subscribed) and the plan type, through RevenueCat. We never see your card number, billing address, or any payment detail.

Why: to unlock the features you paid for.

Device permissions we ask for

Budgery asks for a small number of device permissions. Every one of them is optional — the app works without them, you will just lose the feature attached to each.

  • Microphone and speech recognition — only while you are actively using the voice brain-dump. We do not record in the background and we never store the audio.
  • Calendar — to add, update, and remove the calendar events you ask Budgery to create. We do not read your existing events.
  • Notifications — for reminders, focus timers, and daily check-in nudges. These are scheduled and delivered locally on your device.
  • Motion sensors — the gyroscope is used purely for the budgie's on-screen parallax effect. Nothing is recorded or transmitted.
  • Home screen widget — if you add the widget, your upcoming task titles and times are written to your device's widget storage so they can be displayed. Be aware that widget content can be visible on your home or lock screen. This data stays on your device.

You can revoke any of these at any time in your device settings.

A note on ADHD and sensitive information

People may download Budgery because they identify as having ADHD, attention challenges, neurodiverse or having "busy minds". Under the Australian Privacy Act, information that reveals a health condition is sensitive information and gets extra protection.

We treat the fact that you use an ADHD app as health-adjacent sensitive information. Because of that:

  • You agree to this policy when you create an account, and the sign-in screen tells you so before you continue.
  • We never diagnose you. Budgery is not a medical or clinical tool.
  • We do not collect any clinical health data. There is no symptom tracking, no medication logging, no connection to Apple Health, Health Connect, or any health device or API.
  • We do not share the fact that you use Budgery with advertisers or data brokers. We never will.

You can withdraw consent by deleting your account (see Your rights).

AI task breakdown and automated suggestions

Two features use AI, and both send text to Google's Gemini API:

  • Task breakdown — when you ask Budgery to break a big task into smaller steps, the text of that task is sent to Gemini, which returns suggested subtasks and rough time estimates.
  • Voice brain-dump — the transcript of what you said is sent to Gemini so it can be split into a clean list of separate tasks.

You should know:

  • The suggestions are AI-generated. They are a starting point, not advice.
  • They are not professional, medical, or clinical advice of any kind.
  • We send the task text or voice transcript, and — if you have written one — your optional "About me" context note, because it makes the suggestions fit how you actually work. We do not send your email, your name, or your account identifier.
  • Because your "About me" note is included, please keep anything you would not want sent to a third-party AI service out of it. You can clear it at any time in the You screen.
  • This is the only automated decision-making in the app, and it never makes a decision for you. You always review and edit the suggestions before they are saved.

If you never use the breakdown or voice features, no task text is ever sent to Gemini.

Where your data is stored

Your account and task data is stored with Supabase, in their Sydney, Australia region. Your primary data stays onshore in Australia.

Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and encrypted at rest. Access is controlled by Row Level Security: the database is configured so that you can only ever read or write your own rows. No other user can see your tasks, except for the limited sharing you explicitly turn on.

The app also keeps a local copy on your device (for offline use), a small offline write queue so your changes are not lost when you have no connection, and local settings and progress counters. This local data is removed when you uninstall the app.

Sharing with other people

Budgery has an optional sharing feature so a partner, parent, or support person can see how you are going.

  • You start it by entering the email address of another Budgery user. We look that address up to find their account. If nobody has an account with that address, nothing is sent.
  • The other person must accept the invite before they see anything, and they are shown what they are agreeing to first.
  • Once accepted, they see a read-only list of your task titles, their status, and due dates. They cannot see your notes, subtasks, "About me" note, feedback, or anything else, and they cannot edit your tasks.
  • You can revoke access at any time in the app, and their view stops immediately.

Nothing is shared with anyone until you set this up yourself. It is off by default.

Who we share data with (sub-processors)

We use a small number of trusted service providers to run Budgery. Each one receives only what it needs to do its job. None of them are allowed to use your data for their own purposes.

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising with anyone.

Sending data overseas

Your task database stays in Australia. Several of the providers above process data in the United States:

  • Google Gemini receives the task text or voice transcript you choose to send, plus your optional "About me" note.
  • Google Firebase receives your email address and crash reports.
  • Sentry receives error and crash reports.
  • RevenueCat receives your account identifier and subscription status.
  • Discord receives the feedback you choose to submit.

By creating an account and using these features, you consent to this limited overseas transfer. We take reasonable steps to ensure these providers handle your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

What we do not collect

We do not collect any of the following:

  • Precise or background location
  • Your contacts
  • Your photos or camera
  • Audio recordings — the microphone is used only for live speech-to-text while you hold a voice brain-dump open, and no audio is stored or uploaded by us
  • The contents of your existing calendar events
  • Health metrics or clinical health data (no Apple Health, no Health Connect)
  • Financial information (card numbers, bank details, transactions)
  • Device advertising identifiers for ad targeting

Your rights

Under the Australian Privacy Principles you can:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct anything that is wrong.
  • Delete your account and all associated data.

To delete your account and data, use our data deletion request form. It asks for your name and the email address on your Budgery account so we can find and remove the right records. For access or correction requests, email us at the address below from the address on your account.

We will respond within a reasonable time. When you ask us to delete your account, we delete your account and task data within 30 days of the request, including the copies held by Firebase and RevenueCat. Two things survive that deletion: transaction records held by Google or Apple for tax and accounting purposes, which we cannot remove on your behalf, and anonymised aggregate usage statistics that cannot identify you. Crash reports already sent to Sentry and Crashlytics age out on those services' own retention schedules.

You can also raise a concern with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au if you believe we have mishandled your information.

Children

Budgery is designed for adults (18 and over) managing ADHD and attention challenges. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from children. We do not use child-directed advertising.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your data, we will update this page and change the "Last updated" date at the top. For significant changes we will let you know in the app.
